Abivale Veterinary Group describes itself as offering 24-hour emergency care, and reviews back this up with multiple owners using the clinic for out‑of‑hours emergencies (including a phone call at 1am where advice was given without pushing an immediate visit). The website also references a Pet Health Club® Plus plan (stating that consultations are included) and says it accepts Klarna for payments.
Day‑to‑day experiences described in reviews range from routine surgery (a dog neutered) and quick booking for treatment, to serious complaints about how emergencies and vulnerable animals were handled. Several reviews praise helpful phone advice and friendly staff, while others allege refusal to see a very sick dog without funds, poor communication, and serious errors (e.g., a pet reportedly mis-weighed by 40%).

Took my very sick dog there and unfortunately did not have the money to get them to look at her so the refused to just look. She was put to sleep the next day for free by a vet that cared about the animal in pain not the check in there pocket. Rip Rosie

I mainly use Abivale for out of hours emergency as it’s not the closest to me but they are great. Been there a number of times and staff are very friendly and helpful. I’ve also called at 1am worried about my cat and spoke to them for 20 minutes and they gave honest advice and helped without recommending that I need to come in. Just great service!

I raised concerns about Abivale, and unfortunately, the response has been deeply disappointing. Abivale has shown no remorse or genuine apology. My pet and I endured a distressing and negligent experience at their Abingdon branch. The level of incompetence, unprofessional behaviour at reception, and substandard veterinary care were alarming. Most shockingly, my pet was mis weighed by 40%—a mistake the management dismissed as normal. I am both appalled and frightened. During one of the most difficult periods of my life, this clinic only heightened my anxiety. Their lack of empathy and unacceptable standards make it a place I cannot recommend. Please avoid. Look at reviews carefully and also visit their Facebook page - the picture there is realistic. Also check out the story of Mr Lord Pumpkin the Pomeranian who was killed during sedation in the clinic ...

This review is specifically on Abivale Veterinary Hospital, Abingdon. This place is disgusting, they are a disgrace to their profession. They have no issues lying to clients and they practice animal cruelty. I have been asked to be complicit in this so it is not hearsay. On Monday early evening I found a cat while on a dog walk in Wantage that appeared to be dead at first glance. It was covered in flies, it's own poo, fleas, was very skinny and could barely move on it's own. I picked it up and took it to their Wantage practice who were concerned enough that they had already seen the same cat 3 days prior but in much better condition. It was now starving and severely dehydrated compared to how it had been so they asked me to take it to their 24hr hospital in Abingdon for treatment. They phoned ahead to say I was coming in. On my way home from dropping him off, Abingdon phoned me and asked me to take the cat back and leave him where I found him as there was nothing to treat him for (not what their colleague had said on assessment). I refused and explained the whole story only to be lectured about how they can't take in strays or they be overrun, all I could do was take him back and leave him on the street then call the RSPCA (they were explicit that this needed to be fine by a member of the public and not a vet) as the vet needed funding to treat him. After a lengthy argument, I finished driving home, painted the RSPCA to be told by them that Abivale had lied to me - vets have their own hotline to call the RSPCA but they do not need funding - in fact they have a duty of care under the code of professional conduct with the RCVS to ensure any animal brought in to them does not suffer. Only when I called Abivale beck and recited this and told them that the RSPCA was very interested in what they had told me did they then agree to keep him. My post on social media located his owner (he wasn't microchipped), but the vet handed him over saying he was fine. The cat was not fine, as confirmed by the initial vet who saw him. Avoid Abivale Abingdon if you care about your pets. We have 2 personal experiences with them giving 3 prices for an emergency consultation once they found out we had insurance, and trying to force to pay for medication/treatment he didn't need. After this, I will never be near that place again. The receptionist had said she needed to speak to the clinical director to see if they could keep the car so this is not just a vet issue - it's the whole company prioritising gross profit over saving animals suffering.

Always had excellent care from Abivale. Always happy to give advice over the phone and always quick to get my dog booked in and treated.

A big thank you to all the staff at the Abingdon practice, part of the Abivale Veterinary Group. They neutered my dog on Friday 09 May. I received very good service from everybody who were both friendly and professional. We re-registered with them in April 2022 having been with them during the 1980’s.

This visit was my first for some years. I previously used this veterinary practice to care for my working dogs for many years. It was good then and is just as good now.. The reception and consulting rooms are spacious, which makes it easy to handle your animal, in my case, a large dog. Reception staff and clinicians were friendly and efficient. Came a cross as professional as you could find at any good hotel reception desk. 👍
