#2 Vet in Bicester, Oxfordshire
Hart Veterinary Centre is an RCVS-accredited practice (established in 1993) that treats dogs, cats and small family pets, and runs a 24/7 in-house out-of-hours emergency service with 24-hour nursing and a dedicated overnight team. It’s also listed as a veterinary nurse training facility.
Recent reviews strongly praise the standard of clinical care in specific moments (including sensitive end-of-life support and thorough consultations), while a minority raise concerns about the business side of the practice—particularly continuity of seeing the same vet, costs, and billing/insurance handling. Practical set-up mentioned by clients includes separate waiting areas for dogs and cats, plus on-site parking and air-conditioned premises.

Excellent friendly service, always the best care for our dog when we visit

We have been using Harts since they first opened. They have looked after all our dogs. But unfortunately now it is no longer family owned it has gone very downhill. You never seen the same vet twice, prices have rocketed and it just seems to be a money making exercise. Our last visit was for our dogs booster vaccination and the vet we saw not only didn't look like he wanted to be there he didn't come across that he even liked dogs. So we now have registered with a different vets practice.

The receptionist was not at welcoming. I stood waiting with my ailing dog wrapped in a blanket, while she chatted to a colleague. Then even when that conversation ended she failed to acknowledge me, or ask me about my appointment. Conversely the vet was so tremendously kind, attentive and sensitive. She created a safe compassionate place for me to say a final goodbye to my little companion, a moment I’m not likely to forget. Thank you.

I have used this vet for 20 odd years and used to be good when owned by Mr Hart. I would avoid the place as it is all about making money my original quote ended up £243.37 over no explanation not even a good will gesture. They are cheaper vet services in Bicester and will not be returning sent two threatening letters on the same day asking for the money. I had requested a phone call from the manager this never happened just chased by the accountant. They were brilliant in the past but since being owned by a financial company they are out to maximise profit. Avoid Avoid and this is a genuine review.

I want to start by saying that our vet, Benjamin, was absolutely excellent, this review in no way reflects on the clinical care my cat, Nia, received. Benjamin was kind, thorough, expert, and clearly dedicated to the wellbeing of his patients. However, I was incredibly disappointed by the practice’s stance on insurance claims. I’m insured with PetPlan and have one of their top-tier policies. One of the key benefits of this is being able to make a direct claim, where the insurer pays the vet directly. When I asked if I could make a direct claim, I was told point-blank that the practice does not do direct claims. It was only after I challenged this, explained my background, and pushed back, drawing on my 20 years of experience as a veterinary nurse, dealing with hundreds of practices, none of which have ever refused a direct claim with Petplan, that the member of staff eventually said I could put in a direct claim after all. But let’s be clear: this would never have been offered if I hadn’t known exactly what to say. Most clients wouldn’t have that knowledge or confidence to argue their case, and would simply be left paying out of pocket, often for significant amounts. And that’s what really concerns me. Pet insurance exists precisely because many people don’t have thousands of pounds sitting in their bank account. To be told initially that a direct claim isn’t even an option is, in my opinion, appalling. For that reason, and despite the excellent clinical care, I wouldn’t recommend this practice to anyone who isn’t in a position to pay up front, or fight to be allowed to use the cover they already pay for.

We have been using Hart Vets for over 20 years. The care and service we have received over the years has always been excellent. I highly recommend taking out one of their health plans for your pet. For an affordable monthly fee, it covers annual vaccinations, a six month health check up, All flea and worming treatments are included too. Not only does it offer a saving compared to pay as you go, it also spreads the cost equally over 12 months. Our cat Luna (a Nebelung - see pictures) never gets stressed when visiting Hart Vets. The separate waiting areas for dogs and cats works really well at keeping the stress levels down for both pets and owners. I highly recommend this practice no matter what your pet is!

I can’t recommend Harts enough. I’ve used them for around 6 years, I moved away from Bicester and still use them. They’ve been absolutely amazing looking after my cat. She was very unwell and cared for her like she was their own pet. They made sure I understood the options with her care, helped me made decisions and allowed me to visit her out of hours when she’d be in a few days. All the staff are friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable.
